Fripp Island Resort and Pledge the Pink Hold Guinness World Record for Longest Line of Yard Flamingos
On October 12, 2019 Fripp Islanders came together to accomplish a huge task! Pledge the Pink, a breast cancer event being hosted at Fripp Island, had previously held this world record, but lost it the year before. With Pledge the Pink being hosed on Fripp Island, we decided that we wanted to get that record back!
Thousands of flamingos were shipped to our little island and the call went out for volunteers. We needed people to stick the legs in the flamingos, place the flamingos in the ground, and number the flamingos. Then we needed people to witness the event, some to video and some to photograph EVERY SINGLE FLAMINGO. We even needed a survey crew to come out and verify our numbers. When it was all over, we had 3,753 pink yard flamingos in a continuous line and were able to claim the world record!
While the birds might seem silly to some, there is a greater meaning to them. Pledge the Pink started as a small local charity run called LoCo Motion, aimed at raising some money and helping get people off the couch. This small event has morphed into one that draws 1500 participants from all over the country (and many other countries as well). The mascot for Pledge the Pink is a flamingo and at their event, they place what they call their “Flocks of Love”. Each flamingo in the flock represents $100 fund raised, or enough to pay for one mammogram. In 2019, the grand total raised was over $400,000. Their goal for 2020 is $450,000 – but we’re hoping for a cool half a million.
The people who participate in this event have all, most assuredly, been touched by breast cancer in some way. Their mother, a sister, a best friend – many of them themselves have fought and won. This is a group of people (they call themselves Flockstars) like no other. The amount of love, sisterhood, camaraderie and support will bring you to tears. Don’t believe us? Sign up for the event or plan to be here October 15-18, 2020 to volunteer. We hope to see you!
